One of the better textbooks out there

Some textbooks make you feel like editing them before you can read them; they are overdone with long, drawn-out drivel, as though the authors got paid by the word count. This is not one of them. The information is presented in a clear, non-boring, progressive way that anyone can follow. It uses many examples to illustrate the message they are trying to communicate. (OK, some of the sample writings are dull, but whaddya gonna do?) It has a point-by-point section in each chapter which goes back over all the pertinent information, so that when you're writing a paper, you can be sure you've covered all the bases and you're not overlooking any part of the assignment. All in all, I'm very glad my professor chose this book to teach the class. It made me a better writer, and it didn't bore me to tears in the process.

Be Careful Fellow Students

My English 101 professor had this as required reading and I can honestly say that I never opened this text book. That's not to say that your professor won't assign anything out of it, but I didn't find this to be of any use. I earned an "A" in the course no problem without using this pricey book.

My best advice is to wait and see it you actually need it and THEN order it because from me to you, it's not fun to waste money in college.

Binding is Horrible, ruins the value of the book when turning the pages damages the book itself.

This review doesn't apply to the book itself which contains useful information. However, what good is that when you can't access the information? As a few other reviews have mentioned the binding on this book is horrendous. Even going through and turning every page one page at a time doesn't do anything towards relieving the problem. As soon as a few pages are turned and then you attempt to return to an earlier section you encounter the same problem with not being able to fully open the pages. Well that's if your extremely lucky because in reality the flimsy paper pulled taunt by the binding simply rips much of the time. This review goes to the letter for the other volume as well as it has the exact same issue going on. It's so bad I can't believe that someone got copies of these books during proofing and actually approved this binding design.

good reference book

Good book, I am going to buy the cents nickels dimes guide, don't expect that in this book. Overall good purchase, I recommend studying some of the basics in numismatics so don't make this your first book if you have taken up the hobby.

I'm new to collecting coins and got this book to familiarize myself with spotting coins that may be of interest. It's a nice book and I have spent many hours reading it. I'm very happy with the information I've learned so far.

Powerful in its simplicity

The point of this book was NOT to provide wanna-be producers with a grocery list of production gear to buy...it was not to reduce people's studio setups to a common checklist of items for others to buy.

The point of this book was to capture these producers' LIVES through pictuers. It does this by photographing their studios beautifully. The mess of vinyl records, the stacks of equipment on top of each other, and the general chaos of alot of these pictures shows you what producing is like. While you may not see the gear listed out for you (that would take a long time for each studio), you get a great insight into what these producers use to make their music. You see a selected discography (about 5 cuts) and a small description of each producer and their studio. The photos, again, are incredible to look at. Some in color, some in black and white, all of them very "real," and vintage-looking (just like the equipment).

Don't buy this book as a study or how-to of producing. Buy it because you LOVE making music and can appreciate the beauty of the equipment used to do so.

RIP J-Dilla

This is a great "coffee table" book for fans of hip hop production and hip hop in general. Producers, especially, will appreciate a project like this, as we are granted access to the home studios of producers whose names we see lining the notes of CDs and vinyl releases. Most of the producers featured in the book are what you could call "underground" producers. There are also a handful of bigger names, like DJ Premier, J-Dilla and DJ Shadow, who also open their home studios to the camera.

The pictures of these studio setups are very "artsy". The book is nicely laid out - with a few pictures of each studio. There is very little text - basically a brief introduction to each producer and a shoirt list of their selected works.

This was a great idea and I'm happy I found the book.

A great book for anyone remotely interested in the process of making music!

If your like me and love vinyl, read liner notes front to back, spend hours in dusty un-nameable places looking for that perfect record (preferably in the dollar bin) and produce your own music then this book is a worthy addition to your stuido. Even if you don't have a studio it's still worth pickin up if you are a fan of "underground" hip hop. Raph takes you to many of the most prestigous producers "bedroom" studio's (not all of them are bedrooms) showing you their working enviroment and their gear. I can sit and flip through this book for hours on end disecting each picture finding the key elements to the studio's (and trying to pick up some new titles to go diggin for). If you are at all interested in how the sonic landscapes were crafted for some of the greatest albums in the last 10-20 years pick this up! Not to mention the fact that the DJ Ransom's Mix CD is worth the price alone as it includes rare and classic tracks!

"They made it possible for me to retain my sanity in an insane world," wrote one pilot about the letters his wife sent him throughout World War II. The letters contained in this collection explain the soldier's sentiments. Whether full of passionate longing for a missing sweetheart or merely detailing domestic gossip, the letters offer a rich introduction to how American women experienced the war. Since military authorities ordered soldiers not to keep any letters written them by their loved ones, the authors have done a magnificent service in obtaining letters that soldiers either surreptitiously hid or whose authors copied them before sending them on. The "G.I." generation seems to be growing aware of its mortality, and two couple's collections have appeared recently (Robert and James Eastons's Love and War, LJ 4/15/91; and Charles and Barbara Woodall's Miss You, LJ 4/1/590). Because of its inclusiveness and sensitivity, however, most libraries will want to buy this.

AWESOME - EMOTIONAL - REVEALING - INFORMATIONAL - THE BEST

This book of letters is so revealing of that period in time.
It lays the emotions of the women left behind during war time right out in the open for all to feel and experience. This book has become a part of my life. I work at a college and when we have a program that needs a reading done I am always called on to read from "my" book of WWII letters from home. I feel like these letters are my children and each one is crying out to be heard and I really do hate to have to pick only a couple to read. This book is that good. I feel that this book should be read by everybody especially young people. I get very good response after my readings and some very emotional responses as well. This is a truly wonderful book and I recommend it to everyone.

An Enthralling Collection

I'm very interested in the powerful tapestry of the US homefront during WWII. This book provides a wide variety of first hand accounts of what was happening and more importantly how people felt about these events. The power comes from the fact that the words were written at the time rather than as later rememberances tainted by subsequent experiences. The only selectivity is in the letters people chose to save. But I think the authors have done a good job in trying to mitigate this natural bias by drawing from a wide variety of sources.

A marvelous glimpse at "the home front" during WWII

Compiling 400 letters, Litoff and Smith give readers a very personal look at what World War II was life for American women at home. Reading them is an almost vouyeristic experience, as these women share their thoughts, struggles, personal victories and tragedies.

The book is divided topcially rather than chronologically, giving the reader an opportunity to focus in on one aspect of the war. For example, "I Took a War Job" focuses exclusively on the liberating and empowering experience women felt in working in the defense industry (and making a man's wages.) The most touching and strongest chapter, "The Price of Victory" dealt with the loss of a loved one - husbands, brothers, lovers. The letters are from all social classes, races and parts of the country, providing a representative view, and speaking to the commonality of experiences. It is a remarkable resource, a fantastic read, and a rich collection of primary documents. For the professioal historian, I highly recommend it. For the lay reader, it is as insightful as it is fascinating. Recommended.

DO NOT BUY the sixth edition. This version of the book by Hal-Leonard is untrue to the original version of the songs. A lot of musicians use this book as guideline and to learn the heads of the most valuable jazz songs, however this version is completely different to the original version. My recommendation is that you look for the 5th edition online and go with it.
I bought the book for my music lessons and could not keep along my classmates as the notes and rhythm of the songs is completely different to what the professors used at our academy. Please do not waste your money buying the sixth edition.

Kindle edition is still worthless

I tried the Kindle sample, hoping that the page break problem has been fixed since the 2012 reviews. They give you the whole index and the publishers notes, but only one song, which is formatted ok. I bought the Eb version, hoping for the best. It's completely worthless for anyone who actually plays music. I'm going to stop playing to change pages? I don't think so. I"m going to ask for a refund. What's the matter with Hal Leonard? They want us to find a pirated Bb or Eb version of their book in pdf? Publish one - I'll buy.

About the Author

Ann Camacho has been an English teacher for more than 20 years. She currently teaches American literature at North High School in Riverside, California. Her students (and the student body as a whole) are very diverse, and many are in the school’s International Baccalaureate program and/or AP classes. Ann also participates in the AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) college preparation program for students (often, but not always, from low-income homes) who have college aspirations but are falling short of their potential or who don’t believe college is within reach. She lives in Riverside, California.

This book is a must read for the young and the young at heart!

After reading the introduction of Bookmarked, I was hooked--captivated by the challenge issued to present and former high school students to share their stories of self-reflection and life-lessons learned. I plunged deep into Part I and immersed myself in the courage and boldness of each essay. I could not part with the book. I carried it faithfully with me to work and simply could not wait for my morning and afternoon breaks or my commute home to read the next essay. What I absolutely loved about Bookmarked was the opportunity it allowed for me to find solace and comfort in my own reflections. The "Questions for Reflection, Discussion, and Writing" sections succeed as an outlet for the reader to further connect, not only to the essays, but to their own triumphs and tribulations.

I am an adult in my late thirties, but I must admit I carried Bookmarked with me for days after I finished reading the book. I shared the book and my feedback with those close to me: young and old. The essays sparked a dialogue between my teenage son and me--conversations I will forever cherish.

Every high school student would greatly benefit from reading Bookmarked, especially eleventh and twelfth graders. Just knowing that they are not alone, that other students share the same fears, doubts, family issues, cultural norms, hopes, dreams, and aspirations, is sheer motivation to keep moving forward no matter what obstacles may come along.

Bookmarked: A project to be repeated

I have been teaching 8th grade for a while and I understand, perhaps better than people might think, that for even our brightest most mature students, 7th and 8th grade are transitional years. Good kids do crazy things and get suspended. Readers stop reading. And everyone else seems like Rose and Jack, holding on desperately to the Titanic railing as it gets sucked into the very cold Atlantic.

It will get better, we try and tell parents. We have enough lifeboats; it's just getting the kids into them.

"Bookmarked: Teen Essays on Life and Literature from Tolkien to Twilight" is a book that every middle school and high school teacher should buy. It's not available on Kindle, so I had to buy an actual book off of amazon and even though it was paperback, I was struck by how heavy it was. I'm such a wimp now. Thank you Kindle.

If I have any complaints about the book is that it is focuses maybe too much on books from the high school canon so lots of quotes from "Hamlet" and "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Great Gatsby", and not that there's anything wrong with those, but I wish that more of the books that had moved these students were books they had discovered on their own. But there were those too.

The project assigned to the students was to pick a quote from a book that had moved them and tie it into their own lives. What you get are 2-3 page mini memoirs motivated by these quotes. What I enjoyed most is that these students came from a wide variety of backgrounds and that each piece ended with where the student is today and each one of them had found success in some manner.

"Bookmarked" shows students who suffered through the death of friends and parents, parent divorces, anorexia and just about every other thing you can think of that plagues kids today. It did not shy away from controversial issues, from religion to sexuality. Sometimes the memoir addressed both.

Ann Camacho, the editor and teacher, says this about reading: "Books are blueprints for living and roadmaps for our lives."

This is what we should be teaching our students. The stories are moving and so are the quotes:

From Gandalf in "The Fellowship of the Ring:" "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

From Christopher Robin in "Winnie the Pooh:" "You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."

From Dumbledore to Harry Potter in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets:" "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

Yearning for a Philosophical or Psychological Journey?

Ann Camacho, a high school English teacher, was inspired to create a compilation of essays written by her former and present students called Bookmarked. They were given the task of writing an essay based off of a quote that spoke to them, and each writer wrote a story that was then separated into five parts; beliefs and ideals, family, friends, and love, and hard times and hope are just a few. Since each student opted for an individual quote, there is no plot that the book follows.

However, it combines ideas and tales that appeal to young adults and teenagers because most of the stories tackle some form of identity crisis or development - something that, coming from a teenager, all teens go through. They provide insight and guidance from others who have gone through scenarios akin to those present in our everyday lives, allowing us to form a connection with the students.

A more modern version of Chicken Soup for the Soul branch, this book finds a spot in every adolescent child's heart. The book is loveable and an easy read. Each component of Bookmarked is essentially its own short story, making it fun and bound to keep the attention of every busy teen. The author poses questions at the end of each section, causing the reader to think about what he or she has just read. It helps make this book perfect for students about to journey into the college application world or, perhaps, someone who yearns for a philosophical or psychological journey. The book is a valuable addition to any library.
