Informative literature for those interested in kung fu.

This particular text provides the reader with an unusual amount of information that was available at the time it was first published. It details a variety of styles within the art of kung fu that were likely unheard of to the non-practicioner. This book is for those who are curious and non-specific with their preference towards any style of kung fu, but perhaps not best suited for a practitioner of a certain style searching for more information or already posessing baseline knowledge of their art. Still, the work itself is written fairly well and has some appropriate pictures to go with it. While the book itself is slightly outdated by recent material that is available, it is a fine introduction to any student interested in martial arts, particulary those of China.

Excellent intro to subject

A few readers have criticized this book for not being more comprehensive and for perhaps dealing more with kung-fu styles outside of China, but it's still a good introduction for the non-specialist in kung-fu. Some important styles have been left out, or are mentioned only in passing, such as some of the main animal styles such as snake, dragon, black tiger style, and so on, but they still get some attention in the discussions of some of the styles that incorporate their movements, such as Hung Gar and praying mantis. And the author does do a fine job discussing not just praying mantis, but at least five different praying mantis styles (northern praying mantis, 7-star praying mantis, 6-harmony praying mantis, tai mantis, and tai chi praying mantis (also known as the mayflower mantis style), and five monkey kung-fu styles.
I would have also liked some mention about which styles were important for later developments in karate. For example, a fusion of several styles from Fukien province, dragon, white crane, and tiger, became the basis of such famous Okinawan karate styles as Uechi-ryu. Others, such as Shorin-ryu, incorporate white crane influences and forms. But again, this is not a big deal and is perhaps not appropriate for an intro book.
Anyway, despite a few oversights, the book's strengths by far outweigh its shortcomings. Hollander writes with a nice style and also does a good job with much of the history. So overall, still a fine book on the subject.

Just Enough To Peak Your Interest

Jane Hollander follows the tradition of Draeger and Leung Ting. She writes about every art she can get her hands on, detailing it better than most of the instructors of the style can. Here, she gives a simple guide designed simply to introduce us to the myriad ways that kung fu can be applied. It is not a book for learning exact techniques, but for becoming familiar with basic principles and showing the relationship of various arts which share certain princples. This book gives us the means to see the difference and the similarity, based solely on the basic premises of the styles. To learn more about each art, one would have to get videos & books specifically dedicated to that one art, which would still provide less by way of separate perspectives. This is the type of book that Americans need to help them wade through the confusion of which Chinese art is best for them.

Make WIP your guide to fluency in python

One of the definitions of idiomatic is 'conforming to the usual manner of expression in a language.' An idiom is an expression whose meaning goes beyond the usual grammatical rules of a language. When speaking a foreign language, it separates the second year language student from the native speaker. Even a fluent speaker, who has full command of the vocabulary and grammatical rules, will sound wrong unless they master the idiomatic flow of the language. The best way to assimilate the innate feel of a language is through conversation with native speakers.

Since Python is a written language, you need to develop this feeling of the language by reading code written by experts in the language. Generally, you won't find it in the book. But Writing Idiomatic Python is an exceptional book. It will show you how to write python like a 'native'.

I purchased the PDF from the author's website in 2013. It was a 'travel guide' of sorts, while reading the experts' code available at pypi.python.org. It was invaluable in pointing out the 'sights' not to be missed. I have recommended it to several colleagues, and came to Amazon today to purchase a copy for the office library. The book does have a few shortcomings, and I would have given it 3.5 or 4 stars except for sanctimonious, moronic review by Ridgely.

Ridgely, you're just wrong, about everything! Frankly, I'm tired of seeing programmers try to justify their lack of competence by saying 'program efficiency is unnecessary or even bad.' It is especially irritating when the "premature optimization" quote is used out of context.

Having studied diligently under those taught by some of the great jazz masters, and being greatly influenced by them, Greg was inspired to create the "Adventures in Harmony Series". Wonderful start to brave new world

I bought this book to broaden my musical horizons. I am a keyboard player and I mostly write my own jazz compositions or improvise on standards. Being self-taught I've struggled to master the sometimes incomprehensible language of advanced chords. This book helped very much. This book is light on theory and heavy on application. I applied the technique to some of the my work and it immediately became richer.

I would give this a five star review except for one thing: the two examples are in major keys. Given the wide variety of music in minor keys one is left unsure how to approach minor keys. Their website gospel-chords.com has a malfunctioning 'ask a question' feature and their facebook page is mainly advertising.

The books are expensive not for beginners

I purchased a total of three books in this series. The books are well written with color pictures and good bindings. I am a sax player who wants to add the keyboard to my arsenal. I found this method to be complicated. I put these books in my closet and purchased material from another author on Amazon. I have made a lot more progress using other methods for harmonizing hymns. Simple is usually better when you are starting out. Here is a cheaper alternativeBlack Gospel PianoIntroduction to Black Gospel Piano
Gregory Moody's books may be for more advanced players.I plan to revisit his books after I have spent more time with the keyboard.

`Contes du Lundi` (1873) was first translated to English in 1900 under the title `The Monday Tales`. It's a collection of about 42 short stories by French Naturalist Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897). The stories are mostly autobiographical, many about the historical events of the Franco-Prussian War, Siege of Paris and Paris Commune uprising, which Daudet lived through. The book makes most sense with some prior knowledge or interest in French history, Daudet was writing close to the events and assumes a familiarity. However a few of the best stories can still be read generally. Daudet was probably the most famous author in the world between 1877-1882. He has not aged well and is mostly forgotten today, but a few of the stories from this collection still deserve attention, most of them under 10 pages each.

Following the pattern set with Outsiders I (which covered 1923-1950), this volume covers the independent minor leagues of professional football from 1951 through 1985. Only semipro leagues existed after 1985, and so the two volumes of Outsiders cover the complete history of 20th century football below the National Football League. Many players in these leagues played in the hope that they might get a chance to move up to the NFL and many achieved that dream.
This volume contains histories and yearly statistical summaries for the top minor leagues of the period, plus the World Football League, which has a claim to major league status, and the United States Football League, which was clearly a major league. It also includes yearly summaries for the best of the lesser leagues, which featured a good number of interesting players in their own right.

Steven Brainerd of Tucson, Arizona, is a member of the Minor League Hall of Fame and the United States Football League Association Hall of Fame.
Tod Maher is an award-winning researcher and author who lives in Monterey, California.
All three have written numerous articles and books about professional football.

A Great Find For Football Historians and Fans

OUTSIDERS II is exactly what's promised by the "Note On The 2010 Edition," more facts, more information, more of everything about minor league football during the splendid era of 1951-'85. An expansion and conglomeration of the first OUTSIDERS volume and MINOR LEAGUE FOOTBALL, the vast amount of incorporated material, the statistics, hard to locate facts, and so much more historical information makes this a great research tool as well as a very enjoyable "read." The player registry is a must for those who played or had relatives or friends who played in the minor football leagues that populated the expanse of the nation, especially throughout the 1960's. Gill, Maher, and Brainerd already have a stellar reputation for meticulous research and providing an avalanche of facts and figures. They've outdone themselves with OUTSIDERS II and self admitted football geeks like myself have much to be thankful for.

A step into the past

Enjoyed the book as it brings back some memories especially since our town had a team in the old Continental Football League. I'm researching that same team and this book filled in some of the missing data. If there is one area that would finish off the book would be some photos of the teams, players or game action of that time. But if you are looking for a bit of history in the football that was called "semi-pro" then this is the book you want.

A true specialty book not for the Sunday couch NFL fan. As complete as it can possibly be. This book is for the absolute non NFL football historian. You really have to know your football to enjoy this book which is why I think it is great. No pictures, just MASSIVE DETAILED text, schedules, rosters and game results of every minor league football franchise under the sun from 1951 to 1985. If you are thinking Sunday NFL then this is NOT the book for you as it's everything else but NFL.
