Apricot Jam: And Other Stories, by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

After years of living in exile, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn returned to Russia in 1994 and published a series of eight powerfully paired stories. These groundbreaking works—interconnected and juxtaposed using an experimental method Solzhenitsyn referred to as “binary”—join Solzhenitsyn’s already available fiction as some of the most powerful literature of the twentieth century.

With Soviet and post-Soviety life as their focus, these stories weave and shift inside their shared setting, illuminating the Russian experience under the Soviet regime. In “The Upcoming Generation,” a professor promotes a dull but proletarian student purely out of good will. Years later, the same professor finds himself arrested and, in a striking twist of fate, his student becomes his interrogator. In “Nastenka,” two young women with the same name lead routine, ordered lives—until the Revolution exacts radical change on them both.

The most eloquent and acclaimed opponent of government oppression, Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970, and his work continues to receive international acclaim. Available for the first time in English, Apricot Jam and Other Stories is a striking example of Solzhenitsyn’s singular style and only further solidifies his place as a true literary giant.

Solzhenitsyn at his best
By Daniel Mahoney
These late two part short stories (binary tales) are the best things that Solzhenitsyn wrote in the last twenty years of his life. Stories such as Apricot JAM, EGO, and THE NEW GENERATION capture the atmosphere of oppression and mendacity under "really-existing socialism" as well as anything Solzhenitsyn ever wrote. The writing is clear, taut, and eloquent and captures the attention of the reader from beginning to end. The curious language and syntax in the first story that a previous reviewer refers to occurs in a brief LETTER that a kulak sends to a fellow-travelling Writer. If the reviewer had read on he would have immediately appreciated that Solzhenitsyn had not lost his touch and has an unusually powerful command of language and the sheer expressiveness of the human soul.

fabulous storytelling
By John
This collection of "binary" short stories by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is fabulous.

The stories are: Apricot Jam, Ego, The New Generation, Nastenka, Adlig Schwenkitten, Zhelyabuga Village, Times of Crisis, Fracture Points, No Matter What. Solzhenitsyn wrote the stories between his return to Russia in 1994 and his death in 2008.

The general concept of the "binary" stories is that there is an old story and a new story and they are linked somehow.

All of the stories are studies of the Soviet mindset. Misguided people interact with dishonest people and the result is tragedy.

The quality of the writing is superb. And, the fact that these are short stories each fit for an interesting evening of reading makes the thematic content conveniently accessible.

I highly recommend this for all people interested in Russia.

John Christmas, author of "Democracy Society"

Forgive, but never forget. And then, don't forgive.
By NyiNya
We all have those inner albums of mental photographs taken at some moment of emotional impact, some event that knocks you out of your comfort zone and on your ear...Kennedy's assassination, the launching of the first Sputnik, 9/11. I remember where I was when I read the last words of Solzhenitsyn's "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch" -- words so cold and so bleak, they are not just devoid of hope but a great black hole where all hope dies.

Apricot Jam is evocative of that power. Solzenhitsen lulls us with simple story telling until we find outselves standing with our toes at the edge of an abyss, looking into the dark, and trying to find a reason to lean backwards. The stories are not nearly as powerful as "A Day in the Life," where we survive just one day in the thousands that Ivan Shukof will survive. But all the short stories here point in the same direction. What do we learn from Ivan, that wily zek, who doesn't give up and doesn't compromise his humanity? What precept is to be discerned when ordinary souls don't succumb to despair and just keep struggling and slogging onward? Not a one. Zip, nada, nothing. The only moral here is: Struggle all you want, retain your noble soul. That and a buck will get you a cup of coffee. Deal with it.

These short stories don't have the unforgettable impact of "Day," the reader is not left sucker punched and on the canvas; but like Solzenitsyn's greatest books, they have that same powerful simplicity and beautifully wrought sense of loss and hopelessness -- but without any trace of pity or pathos. Apricot Jam gives us that sense of claustrophobia and futility, of swimming upstream, that must be the daily burden carried by all intelligent people who live under a repressive regime.

There is a dry humor at work in the stories...Solzhenitsyn always adds an ironic twist. In Apricot Jam, he uses a literary device he terms "binary" to reinforce the irony. People and events from the past show up to complicate the present. There is an interconnect among the stories and a sting in the tail. Readers of O'Henry will be familiar with the process.

When he went back to Russia in 1994 and did a victory lap around what used to be the USSR, Solzhenitsyn had to be laughing to himself. The champagne and brandy soaked receptions with glad-handing petty Moscow bureaucrats who were his former judge and jury, the back-slapping commissars in Irkutsk and Vladivostok who, a few years earlier, were running the Gulag, not the Trans Siberian Railroad, must have been amusing indeed. But these stories show us that he wasn't buying their dog and pony show. One can imagine a little hardness behind the eyes whenever the writer clinked glasses and toasted "Na Zdrovie" to one of his former captors.

One last word re translation: It's possible to The Gulag Archipelago in one translation and come away with completely different vignettes than would someone who read a different version. "One Day in the Life" seems to have the wildest discrepencies: in a particularly egregious translation, Ivan breakfasts on one dish identified as porridge, and a completely different dish called gruel. You'd have to read a different copy of the book to learn his first course was boiled grain and the second fish soup. It may sound minor, but after having spent 24 hours with Ivan Denisovich, nothing is more important that what he calls 'the almighty soup.' The quality of translation here seems to be good. Much of Solzenhitsyn's playfulness with words and syntax appears to be present.

Christopher Phillips is a man on a mission: to revive the love of questions that Socrates inspired long ago in ancient Athens. "Like a Johnny Appleseed with a master's degree, Phillips has gallivanted back and forth across America, to cafés and coffee shops, senior centers, assisted-living complexes, prisons, libraries, day-care centers, elementary and high schools, and churches, forming lasting communities of inquiry" (Utne Reader). Phillips not only presents the fundamentals of philosophical thought in this "charming, Philosophy for Dummies-type guide" (USA Today); he also recalls what led him to start his itinerant program and re-creates some of the most invigorating sessions, which come to reveal sometimes surprising, often profound reflections on the meaning of love, friendship, work, growing old, and others among Life's Big Questions. "How to Start Your Own Socrates Café" guide included.

Amazon.com Review
For Christopher Phillips, philosophy is a passion: it is not so much a discipline to be learned as an experience to be lived. Taking his cue from Socrates, the inaugurator of the Western philosophical tradition, Phillips embarks on a search for truth and meaning through a series of conversations that is at once refreshing, humorous, troubling, confusing, encouraging, depressing, and provocative. What makes Plato's Socratic dialogues so enduring--and Phillips's book so intriguing--is that for both Plato and Phillips, philosophy is not something you read or study. It is something you do. Plato wrote in Parmenides that "without wandering around and examining everything in detail one is unable to secure understanding." Phillips takes this approach--the Socratic approach--to heart. In the course of Socrates Café, he travels around asking questions of everyone who's interested. Just like the real Socrates, who did not confine himself to the Athenian ivory tower, Phillips searches out public conversations--what he calls Socrates cafés--with children, seniors, psychiatrists, prisoners, ex-academics, students, lawyers, and everyday people. In a sense, the book is a series of short, modern-day Socratic dialogues interspersed with meditations on the nature of philosophical inquiry.

Phillips seizes upon what the Greeks called "elenchus," a method of inquiry that helps people see their own beliefs and opinions more clearly. In the course of the numerous Socrates cafés highlighted in this book, Phillips persistently reminds us that we ought to ask questions simply because the process is good for us. In each of the cafés, the participants vary as widely as the questions, and the dialogues are by turns candid, insightful, muddled, intelligent, bland, and piquant. The real meaning of Socrates Café lies in the contentious and wonderful space of human interaction. --Eric de Place

From Publishers Weekly
In an entertaining blend of memoir and philosophical reflection, a former journalist describes his adventures bringing philosophy to the masses through his Socrates Caf‚. Phillips travels the country starting philosophical discussion groups in caf‚s, schools, churches, community centers, prisons, hospices, nursing homes and senior centers. In each session, a question from a participant becomes the focus for free-flowing, sometimes contentious, communal inquiry. Questions spotlighted in this book include "What is insanity?" "How do you know when you know yourself?" "What is a world?" "Does anyone have the right to be ignorant?" and "Why question?" A rough version of the Socratic method is employed, characterized as "the sustained attempt to explore the ramifications of... opinions and... offer compelling objections and alternatives." Phillips presents several real discussions in poetically "filtered" form, interspersed with his own lucid commentary and citations. These dialogues are lively and sometimes moving, particularly his account of how he met his wife. But the quality of participants' opinions is often low, on the sophomoric level of such comments as "Communication is meaningless," and despite Phillips's efforts to probe, these dialogues yield few fresh insights. Phillips's own philosophical weakness is in romanticizing questioning as nearly an end in itself, claiming to run a "church service for heretics," even though his belief that "all so-called truths... are never the last word" is itself a popular dogma. Nevertheless, as in the case of the usually silent fifth-grader who wonders out loud about the word "wonder" ("I wonder what other kids think of me.... I wonder what they see, I wonder if they see a good person..."), he winningly showcases a tantalizing method for getting philosophy to thrive more widely.

From Library Journal
Former journalist Phillips travels around the country to elicit dialogs, questions, and philosophical investigations from nonacademic participants. Elementary schools, senior-citizen facilities, public coffeehouses, and other well-populated venues provide the backdrops for the discussions he reports in this account of what "doing philosophy" can and does mean in contemporary culture. "To this day," he claims, "Socrates' example continues to teach us how to expand our own intellectual and imaginative horizons." In an accessible format and breezy tone, Phillips shows how his public Socratic forums help many in attendance work through the kind of life issues that would send others for professional help. Among his own boosters are distinguished scholar and professor of philosophy Matthew Lipman and Harvard psychiatrist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Coles. Both this book as well as the web site (www.philosopher.org) that it complements provide inspirational guidance for those who want to investigate wisdom beyond the halls of academia or at least read about the efforts others are making in this regard. Real People Doing Real Philosophy!
By Sara
This book is the fascinating story of a young man imbued with the love of philosophy, who wants to bring philosophical thinking into the lives of more people. So, in his words, as a Johnny Appleseed of Philosophy, he begins going to book stores, coffee shops, elementary schools, senior centers, even prisons, to hold philosophical jam sessions. With a little advance notice, he can usually draw at least a small crowd. Sometimes he's surprised at the numbers of people who show up. He introduces himself, and asks what questions the folks in attendance would like to discuss philosophically. Suggestions are made, and soon a free wheeling, yet Socratically disciplined conversation begins, typically among people who don't know each other, and who are perhaps from very different backgrounds, occupations, and worldviews. With Chris playing the role of Socrates, and teaching by example how we can all play that role - the role of a seeker after wisdom who is willing to question everything in search of the truth - he ignites philosophy in a place where it may never before have happened. He teaches and he learns. And he moves on to the next opportunity for creating philosophical community.
It's quite a story. This is a man on fire to help people think more deeply about their lives and experiences. And a man willing to go wherever he can to make this happen. Throughout the pages of the book, he comes across as an idealist who is willing to do what it takes to see his dream come true. And the book consists of stories from along the way. We get to sit in on discussions all over the place, in a prison, or in a school. We are allowed to listen in on people's ruminations, reflections, and efforts to articulate their deepest beliefs. We overhear polite disagreements and witness collaborative efforts to get at the truth. What is the examined life recommended by Socrates? How can we live it? What is the best sort of life to live? And how do we get our bearings day to day, whatever we happen to be doing?
The conversations can veer from the practical to the theoretical, but always the voices of real people break through. I couldn't put it down until I had read the whole book, and it's rare for a new book to hold my attention like that when I really should be reading three others I've already started.
Take a look at Socrates Cafe and you may find yourself drawn into its great conversations like I was. And somewhere up in Platonic Heaven, Socrates himself may smile.

An advertisement for itself...
By Nathaniel Avery
The book started off in a very interesting fashion. The dialogues he initiates are interesting. They also have some enlightening answers. Not to mention rational thinking, a very under-used part of the mind, is given an arena to exercise itself. However, I felt the second part dragged. Or as a family member described it, "he turned into his own commerical." The more I look back on it, the better that statement seems to describe later sections of the book. His writing is for the most part good. His aim is admirable. But in the process the book became bogged down and uninteresting. I also think the premise that truth can be arrived at through conversation is an untenable one. It can map out exactly what we are talking about and the complexities of the issue, but not much more than that. I don't think the book has anything lasting about it. It merely seems to reflect a trend to bring philosophy into the pragmatic, everyday world, such as Alain de Botton. I would recommend Botton's work as opposed to this, which has much greater insights into everyday life using traditional philosophy. If more people take this route, philosophy can be saved from word games and deconstruction, which even Derrida himself said "can not be a method and should not be one."

Tantalizing philosophical thinking of the highest order.
By Hal
The only people who won't like this book are academics who have made their discipline irrelevant and sophists who have made their discipline a laughingstock. They'll feel threatened by the new and invigorating and exhilarating life Phillips breathes into philosophy. Phillips shows in a way that I have not seen before in a modern philosophy book that philosophy isn't merely about asking certain questions -- What is truth? What is being? -- in the way questions are asked. So it is that via his mesmerizing version of the Socratic method of philosophical inquiry, Phillips explores in a profound and yet sweeping way in "Socrates Cafe" such questions as "Why is what?" "How can an intelligent, sensitive person get stuck in a lousy job?", "What is home?" and "What is silence?" He has recaptured the tradition of unendlingly novel and illuminating philosophical exploration that sadly has gone by the wayside for the most part since Socrates' lifetime. This book is for everyone who wants to push their thinking, for everyone who wants to better answer such questions as "Who am I?" and "Who can I become?" Thank you Christopher Phillips for bringing philosophy back to the people and for having the courage of your convictions in presenting such a compelling alternative to the narrow, unimaginative thinking that passes for philosophy today in books by academics and sophists.

The Lie That Wouldn't Die: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, by Hadassa Ben-Itto

Of all the libels that have served as a means of incitement of hate against Jews, and as intellectual justification of anti-Semitism, the myth of the so-called 'Jewish Conspiracy' to gain domination of the whole world, as embodied in the forged Protocols of the Elders of Zion, is probably the most devious and the most dangerous. Previously only analyzed in academic, footnoted studies, the history of the Protocols is presented here by Judge Hadassa Ben-Itto in an eminently readable, fascinating account, telling the stories of the numerous people involved over the hundred years that the forgery has existed. Above all, this is the story of a judge who follows the Protocols into lawyers' chambers and into courtrooms in Switzerland, in South Africa, in Germany, in the United States and in Russia, and presents the reader with a detailed critical analysis of legal proceedings which culminated in fascinating courtroom drama. The truth is revealed again and again, but the lie wouldn't die.

Protocols of the elders of Zion taken apart.
By R. Mazinter
Judge Hadassa Ben-Itto delves into the origins of the monstrous anti-Semitic fraud, The Protocols Of The Elders Of Zion. With detailed, well supported research her forensic dissection of the evidence leaves the reader with a picture whose jigsaw pieces come together in this major work that should lay to rest, and will among all thinking readers, the libelous fraud aimed at the Jewish people. But as Judge Ben-Itto points out the lie still survives and is regularly trotted out for political ends in the 21st Century. She cautions that the propagation of this oldest hatred leads inevitably to conflict, never ends with the Jews, and is the antithesis of international, peaceful coexistence. This book is well written, easily assimilable and should be required reading and on the bookshelf of of everyone.

Better than CSI
By CER
This book is highly readable and provides an absorbing accounting of some of the court cases involving the so called Protocols. I especially liked the way one layer after another of evidence. That can make it hard to keep your place in the story if you only do a few pages at a time. If you like details and legal considerations then this is quite interesting.

This book is a good complement to Warrant for Genocide by Cohn. The original literary source of the Protocols is also very interesting after reading Ben-Itto's book and it's available in a modern edition titled: : The Dialogue in Hell between Machiavelli and Montesquieu: Humanitarian Despotism and the Conditions of Modern Tyranny" (Paperback) by Maurice Joly.

How ironic that Joly's material actually inspired imitation by those who instead critized and tried to crush the Jewish people unjustly. I wonder if Stalin and Hitler had a copy of this or the protocols by their bed sides. Continuing spread of the protocols shows how contagious evil can be.

Now it's time for someone (maybe our author) to pickup from this with a more pointed focus on current middle eastern mis-use of the protocols. Those turn of the century Czarist agents generated a best seller that continues to provoke outrage. What a blight on the world. People need to realize how much ugly and nasty stuff like this exists and motivates so many in our troubled world and then tell others.

Great work Ms Ben-Itto !

A first- rate exposure of a destructive forgery
By Shalom Freedman
The 'Protocols of the Elders of Zion' is one of the most famous and perhaps the most damaging forgery ever done. In this scholarly and informative work the President of the International Organization of Jewish Lawyers and Judges Hadassa Ben-Itto traces the origin and development of the work. What began in the cellars of the nineteenth century Tsarist secret police became a favorite document of the Nazis, and today is spread throughout the world by the evil largesse of Saudi Arabia, and other Islamic groups including Hamas.

In other words this work has been used at various times and places as a means for hating Jews and demanding their destruction.

The Protocols main thesis that there is an international Jewish government planning to take over the world is absurd to anyone who knows the actual history of the Jews in the past two thousand years or even more. The Jews for those two thousand years were by and large a people scattered and persecuted, exiled and stateless. Nonetheless the coming into being of the modern state of Israel, the ingathering of Jews from over a hundred nations has not put an end to the slanderous uses of the Protocols.

In this book Ben- Itto presents the history of the creation of the Protocols - She describes the court trial in Bern in 1934 which exposed the Protocols as falsification: She shows how the deliberately obscure style allows the advocates of this book to link any event to it, no matter what it is: Tzar's family murder or financial crisis.

She shows how this forgery contributed to 1974 UN Resolution that declared Zionism to be one of the types of racism. Now the Protocols are used by Islamic fundamentalists and, in particular, the organization Hamas" that distributes that defamatory piece in the Muslim countries.

Ben- Itto too demonstrates how the Protocols are not simply harmful to Jews but to the character of any state that adopts them.

This is a first rate piece of research which unfortunately will probably not be read by those who need it most, the disseminators and promoters of the forgery.

For the general reader however it is a fascinating guide to a particularly unsavory dark corner of history.
