Love it! Perfect!

Love it! Bought a handful of books as I'm just now getting into coloring. I almost didn't get this book, thinking I'd like the others better. This has instantly became my favorite! Different levels of detailing from page to page so that you have options to fit your mood. Pages thick enough to use gel pens and not bleed through to the next page. LOTS of pages, so many to choose from. Book has easily 2 to 3 times more pages than other books I've bought. Interesting, different patterns. I'm posting two photos. First photo has more intricate detailing and is the first page I completed in the book (used gel pens). Second photo is of a work in progress with colored pencils.

This is an incredible coloring book with fantastic flowing art work, one picture per page, 46 total illustrations.

This is an incredible book with fantastic flowing artwork. My favorite illustrations are the 15 delicate doily type illustrations and out of 46 illustrations I only noticed 3 that I would not want to personally color .

Bring out your imagination, arouse your senses and creativity, and as you become engaged in the pleasurable, soothing activity of Coloring, it calms you and instantaneously starts reducing your stress level.

This book is a wonderful addition to your coloring library; a perfect gift school aged children, college students, or adults who enjoy coloring, and a much easier way to reduce stress than going to the gym.

1. 46 illustrations printed one per page (the back of each page is blank) on bright white, medium weight paper and the page numbers are listed on the back of the page not on the front where the picture is.

2. Illustrations include 15 delicate, circular doily type drawings(my favorites) Most of the rest are bordered full page designs from simple geometric shapes with very little detail to complicated very detailed geometric shape designs. There are a few miscellaneous sprinkled through the book l did see one paisley design.

3. The complexity and details vary with the pictures, some you will need sharpened colored pencils or Gel pens for and others crayons or wide markers would work. Place a piece of scrap paper under the page you are coloring in case your pens or markers bleed through the page. My Fiskars Gel Pens did not .

I just received mine and the patterns are off set. They are cut off on the top. Very beautiful patterns but the top to the pictures are gone. I'm rather disappointed in the quality of the book itself.

Lord's originality and lively imagination shine through as he reflects on the beauty of a hyacinth, compares himself to a goldfish in a bowl, and pictures the scene of himself standing before God in judgment.

About the Author
Daniel A. Lord, S.J. (1888-1955), was a prolific writer of more than ninety books and three hundred pamphlets. He was also a talented musician and composer. An accomplished pianist, he composed grand-scale musical dramas that involved hundreds of youth and were performed in different locations around the country. In 1927, Lord consulted for Cecil B. DeMille's production of the silent film King of Kings and helped create the Motion Picture Production Code to ensure decency in film production, earning him the nickname "the Hollywood priest."
Thomas Gavin, S.J., was the author of Daniel Lord's biography, A Champion of Youth.

Rev. Michael Rossmann, S.J., is the editor-in-chief of The Jesuit Post. He joined the Jesuits in 2007 after graduating from the University of Notre Dame. He taught at Loyola High School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and is currently studying theology at Boston College.

Rev. David J. Endres is codirector of field education and assistant professor of Church history and historical theology at The Athenaeum of Ohio. A priest of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, he earned a doctorate from the School of Theology at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.

Answers to Exercises are Available in Some Versions

In its day, this was a widely used book across the US for teaching high school Trig and Algebra II. Mary P. Dolciani was a Math professor at Hunter College, NY, but more famously, an influential educator of Math teachers. Today, both an education center and an endowment bear her name in recognition her legacy. This is a review of the 1963 and 1965 editions of the book. The only substantive differences I noticed were in the last chapter on p. 599 and pp. 603-604 (practice tests). "Modern Algebra and Trigonometry Structure and Method Book 2" was published in four different versions. These are,

Teacher's Manual ("Teacher's Edition" is printed on the spine) - This has a separate teacher's manual (usually on green paper) at the beginning of the book along with teacher notes throughout the rest of the student text. Answers to exercises are in the back of the book.

Student Version ("With Answers" is printed on the spine) - Answers to odd and even-numbered exercises are in the back of the book.

Student Version ("With Odd-Numbered Answers" is printed on the spine) - Answers to odd-numbered exercises are in the back of the book.

Student Version (no additional annotation on the spine) - No answers to exercises.

However, those answers in the back exclude four types of exercises: 1) graphs, 2) proofs and "show thats," 3) exercises in the twelve "Extra for Experts" sections, and 4) exercises in two of the three transparency insert sections. If you desire the answers for 1, 2 and 3, they are included in a separate publication, viz., "Solution Key for Modern Algebra and Trigonometry Structure and Method Book 2" (no ISBN). I found it devilishly difficult getting hold of a copy of the Solution Key at a reasonable price.

There is significant overlap in the topics in Ch. 1-8 and Book 1 of this series. Ch. 9-16 are essentially new material with respect to Book 1. The plentiful exercises are all quite doable and are ordered in very gradually increasing levels of complexity. There are almost no compromises to mathematical rigor. Axioms and definitions are clearly presented, and proofs given for all theorems - except for one in Ch. 14, "Every polynomial equation with complex coefficients and nonzero degree n has exactly n complex roots." Sections dealing with interpolation for increasing accuracy when using four digit log and trig tables are now passé.

Best version of best Algebra II textbook of all time

After the Soviet Union launched Sputnik into orbit in 1957, America feared a potential missile base on the moon in the hands of a hostile superpower that America lacked the technology to reach. The federal government did something unusual in America: it asked top universities what should be taught in high schools to optimize the education of future scientists and engineers; and it used it influence to gain adoption for the new curriculum. In mathematics, this book and its cousins with first Author Mary Dolciani were the results.

The basic approach is to blend a set-theory approach to the foundations of mathematics with procedural math for doing computations. (That is why the subtitle is "Structure and Methods.") For example: (a) A function is a mapping from one set (the domain) to another (the range), and the set of all points that get mapped onto is called the "image." (Current high school terminology unfortunately uses the term “range” for what mathematicians call the image, which is a bad attempt to "simplify" the ideas.) (b) Addition and multiplication of real or complex numbers are associative commutative binary operations on pairs of real numbers to the real numbers.

The power of this approach is that students’ intuitions about integers and real numbers serve as foundations for higher mathematics, starting with matrices and linear algebra, calculus, function spaces, probability and literally everything.

A bit more history about how this occurred: Late in the nineteenth century, mathematics had outgrown use of equations and variables as the fundamental language of most of mathematics. There were two competing approaches to providing a stronger foundation: “lambda calculus” which formalized symbolic computation using symbolic logic (and which became the foundation of LISP), and set theory. Set theory proved far more flexible and powerful and it became the universal language for all mathematics in the twentieth century.

From 1960 to 19990, this approach to secondary mathematics was called “the new math.”

The Math Wars

In the 1970s and 1980s, this approach to high school mathematics was virtually eliminated from American high schools. Evidence clearly shows that most students do worse with the “new math” approach based on sets and mappings, and I believe this is accurate. You can see a review of the math wars at [...]

The unmentionable elephant in the room is that the mythical top 10% or so do much better with the new math approach. That is why the universities recommended this approach to the federal government after Sputnik, and why the federal government encouraged its adoption in schools. That is why all my friends at MIT found it a great help. That is why as a math tutor today, I find clients who like it and benefit from it. This approach works well because (a) it explains the complexities of ordinary math in such elementary terms that some students say it feels like they already know it and just have to rediscover that they know it (Plato’s concept of innate knowledge); and (b) when you move on to more advanced math, it is based on the same abstract concepts of sets and mappings, as are integers and real numbers.

I say “mythical top 10%” because the students who can benefit from the sets and mappings approach are not necessarily the ones with the best math grades. The key determinant of who benefits is ability to think abstractly and to relate the abstractions to concrete procedures. My experience is that some students, who have these abilities but do not do very well in math, like this approach benefit greatly from it.

The sets-and-mappings approach impairs performance of the majority of students because they do not make the connection between the abstractions and procedural math. As a result, these students have more material to learn, the new material does not help them understand and perform math procedures, and math procedures get a smaller share of student time than with the traditional approach.

It is a losing proposition to introduce curricula that meet the needs of the top 10% but impairs the learning of perhaps 70% of the student population, unless you restrict that curriculum to people who can benefit. That restriction is an important reason why AP courses survive in the current environment. Similarly, if you tried to introduce an MIT undergraduate curriculum in most colleges, it would be resoundingly rejected.

About the Author
Dr Yves Crama is Professor of Operations Research and Production Management and the former Director General of the HEC Management School of the University of Liège, Belgium. He is widely recognized as a prominent expert in the field of Boolean functions, combinatorial optimization and operations research, and he has coauthored more than 70 papers and three books on these subjects. Dr Crama is a member of the Editorial Board of Discrete Applied Mathematics, Discrete Optimization, the Journal of Scheduling and 4OR - the quarterly journal of the Belgian, French and Italian Operations Research Societies.

The late Peter L. Hammer (1936-2006) was a Professor of Operations Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, Management Science and Information Systems at Rutgers University and the Director of Rutgers University Center for Operations Research (RUTCOR). He was the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the journals Annals of Operations Research, Discrete Mathematics, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Discrete Optimization and Electronic Notes in Discrete Mathematics. Dr Hammer was the initiator of numerous pioneering investigations of the use of Boolean functions in operations research and related areas, of the theory of pseudo-Boolean functions, and of the logical analysis of data. He published more than 240 papers and 19 books on these topics.

FANTASTIC!

A very well written and detailed history of The Professionals including interviews, quotes and amusing anecdotes from many cast and crew members. From actors, producers, directors, stunt men, special effects men to the production company's hair dresser. They all have their say with memories of what went on during the making of the show, including the problems, the hard work and the fun too; it's all in this book. Lots of background and technical information, deleted scenes, script changes, amusing stories and many wonderful behind the scenes photos. Not only that but it includes location/shooting schedules in incredible detail for every one of the 57 episodes. There is also a complete episode guide with synopsis, cast and production unit lists, including many previously uncredited. The action cars are listed for each episode too, showing real and false registration plates. There's a chapter on the three lead stars, Lewis Collins, Martin Shaw and Gordon Jackson and a detailed merchandise section. Something for everyone in this book, it's a highly entertaining and informative read, highly recommended.

This book has clearly been a long time in preparation. If you think you know everything about the production of the late 70's tv series THE PROFESSIONALS, then you're almost certainly wrong.

This book isn't just an episode guide. It's an in-depth guide to the making of the series, incorporating comments from cast and crew alike. It is illustrated throughout, with many photos not having been seen before.

If you're a PROFESSIONALS fan, this book will be referred to again and again. A very comprehensive and detailed examination, all the more impressive since the book is being published a long time after the series finished airing.

This book is incredible! It is chock full of detail and I keep finding new information every time I peruse it. To me the most amazing thing is that every single location has been identified - what a labor of love! Also, the name of every cast member including uncredited ones is listed. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. It is well worth every penny for the serious Pros fan. I highly recommend it.
