If you are longing to run the race you were born to run. . .

Christine writes like she lives. It's an invitation to believe that God has something big in the kingdom marked with your name, and how to run after it with faith and focus. If you don't want your life interrupted or you long for faith that keeps you comfortable rather than called, than it's probably not the book for you. But if you are seriously hungry to run the race you were born to run, pick up this book.

Unstoppable

I think this book gives so much inspiration whether you are new to christian faith or old to christian faith. Christine Caine always knows how to get people fired up about Jesus. It makes you realize how much more you can do if you trust fully, and live for Jesus. I recommend this highly if you feel stuck and lost as if you have nowhere to go. It might just give you a kick in the butt you have been needing or wanting.

Good for a question book, but better board review options are out there

As far as practice question books go, this is right on the money. There's tons of practice questions, split up by clerkship (which helps if you're studying for shelf exams). The explanations are good at showing not only why the correct answer is correct, but why the other options are wrong. I didn't give it 5 stars since the questions are a bit on the shorter side compared to the real board. But other than that, it's good review.

Actually, my biggest complaint is not with the book per se, but that if you're serious about practicing for the boards, you're better off going with an online qbank. While they're more expensive than this Qbook, you get much more content, better explanations, and you can tailor your studying to your weak areas.

But as far as QBooks go, I'd recommend this one.

Good and loved the price

I love doing practice questions (much better than reading review books), so when I saw this one and the good price, I had to have it. While going through the questions, I didn't notice many mistakes or typos, and the topics seemed fairly similar to the real thing.

I ended up only studying from this Qbook and 1 other review book before Step 2. My hope was to avoid having to buy other materials (specifically I didn't want to shell out for another online question bank). Although I didn't feel too great on the day of the test, I ended up with a good score (>245).

Useful for the Step 2CK!

I own the 2009 edition of this book, so I'm going to review that. While I didn't use the book as my primary question source (it is strongly advisable to use one of the popular online qbanks (Usmle World/Kaplan/Usmle Rx) for that as they are more thorough), this book was very useful to me during the last few weeks of my step 2CK to help me assess my "readiness".

According to an online seminar of Kaplan Medical I once heard, Dr. Steven Daugherty (author of the study skills and exam strategies section included in this book) mentioned that if you consistently score (in multiple blocks in timed format) between 60-65% correct you are going to either get a low pass or borderline fail; between 65-70% you are going to pass; and greater than 70% you are going to score high. So this qbook was very helpful to me in giving me my percentage scores of each subject discipline as I did them in a timed manner.

But to get a more accurate idea of my score, I used First Aid's Step 2CK Q&A which has an 8 block exam to simulate the exam experience (in addition to questions according to organ system/subject wise). This was also a good resource that I used during my last week before the exam. I did 4 blocks from the simulation exam and scored 66%. I also did the latest free 3 block exam from the USMLE website and scored 72%. I scored well on the actual exam.

Most people use NBMEs to give them their predictive score to assess their exam readiness and that can be helpful. I also used them. But I found the percent scale system of Dr. Daugherty much more reliable and useful. As long as you are consistently scoring between 65-70% you will pass and if you are consistently scoring more than 70%, you will kill this exam.

Speaking of Dr. Daugherty, he has a VERY USEFUL website with free information on how to tackle the USMLEs (it is usmlethought.com - be sure to add the www!). His exam strategies included in this qbook were very helpful to me even though I did not follow those suggestions of his that didn't work with my studying/exam taking style. The most useful take home message that Dr. Daugherty gives in this book and his website is that the Steps are two fold:

1. They test your understanding of medical knowledge and your skill to reason and think like a physician in clinical vignette setting; and

2. They test your test-taking skills - your ability to pace yourself and maintain your concentration for 8 to 9 hours. Timing and concentration is KEY to doing well on this exam.

Overall, this book was useful to me. Hence, I give it 5 stars!

Constantly ignored by his classmates, teachers, and even his parents, Jacques Papier feels like everyone hates him, except for his sister Fleur. When he learns the devastating truth–that he is actually Fleur's imaginary friend–Jacques goes on a soul-searching journey to discover himself in the hopes to one day become real. Written as a fictional "autobiography," the first-person narration helps readers better understand and sympathize with Jacques and his unusual plight. Despite being imaginary, Jacques is still a fully realized character, with his own fears, hopes, and quirks, and is an engaging protagonist. Cuevas includes several clever and humorous touches to Jacques' story, including "Imaginaries Anonymous," a support group for imaginary friends once they learn that they are imaginary, and "The Office of Reassignment," a bureaucratic agency where imaginary friends go to be reassigned to new children when their old ones outgrow them. A Miraculous Book!

A MIRACLE happened in my house last week. I gave my daughter -- the one that doesn't like to read -- a book I had started and loved. I suggested she read it. I walked away. I checked back in a few minutes later, saw her still reading and LAUGHING. And she finished it! She's in the 5th grade. Here's her little review:

I really liked this book. I liked the people Jacques visited. I liked all of his adventures. I liked how he went to different places and he helped them.

My 10-year old said this was the best book she's ever read

My 10-year old said this was the best book she's ever read. She thought it was "sad, funny, and deep." She sobbed and sobbed when she came to the end of the book and was very profoundly touched by the story, the main character, and the relationship between the young girl and her imaginary friend. It reminded us a lot of Edward Tulane but had more humor. She rarely gets so hooked on a book that she'll opt to read for long stretches just to get to the end, but she could not put this one down and read the last 10 or so chapters in one sitting.

What happens when an imaginary friend finds out they are imaginary. In Confessions of an Imaginary Friend, a Memoir of Jacques Papier by Michelle Cuevas , we are introduced to the life of Jaques Papier and his sister Fleur. In School, at home and everywhere else Fleur is the popular sibling while Jaques can’t get anyone to notice him. He loves Fleur and she is not just his sister but his very best friend.

When Jaques finds out he is not really Fleur’s brother but her imaginary friend, he is sure there is some mistake. Unwilling to accept the truth, he is devastated to find that he may truly be imaginary. He begins his own quest to find out who he really is and what his future holds. How can he be real if he technically “isn’t there?”

This is a fun filled work full of hijinks and discovery as Jacques meets a series of youngsters, and other imaginary friends. As he pushes himself to find the truth, he discovers his own wonder of belonging and being himself.

This is just a wickedly funny and fun look at what happens when the imaginary discovers that they are imaginary. What a fun spoof of realization that would be. In this quirky Memoir of Jacques Papier you find yourself worrying about and rooting for something that is only imaginary. Cuevas takes us into the unusual and if you have ever had an imaginary friend or wanted one, this is a funny take of the possibilities. She also answers the ‘age old question,' what happens to an imaginary friend when they are no longer needed.

learn Java in 8 hours

This is the book you want if you want to master Java in one day. It's broken down into 8 hours. You start off with variables and quickly move to logic, if-then-else, arrays, strings, OOP, inheritance, interfaces, exception handling, and I/O. It also ends with a very handy 100 question test at the end. If you're already familiar with similar languages like C++ or C#, or even PHP to a certain extent, then picking up Java is very easy once you know the odds and ends. This book was a quick and easy refresher, but also works great if you haven't used Java yet.

Unlike many "print" programming books available in bookstores, this one isn't bloated with a copy and paste of the Java manual PLUS it's not one of those "cookbooks" where you have to follow along with useless projects. This one is the best of both worlds.

Personally i knew nothing about Java at all and decided i would set out to educate myself, that is how i came about this book and i don't regret it at all. Java in 8 Hours is exactly that, i have a much better understanding of the coding that goes on within the JavaScript.
For anyone who would like to learn what Java is about then this ebook is a definite must, Ray Yao's delivery method is excellent and very easy to understand. I am sure that i will be reading this book many times as i will always find something new and i will be sharing this with my friends for sure.

When you have to learn any language you have to learn it from an Expert.I think if you are a beginner with Java you must consult this book this will be prove a great help to you.Only reading a book may not help but it is also important to understand it.And for understanding language style is must.Very organised book step wise and hour wise.Very minute details are given in the book with examples.I think any layman can learn from it.And it not only teaches Java but also having Tests which you can take and see how much you learned from it.Without spending much and time in classes you can learn it from here only.
This learning will definitely help you in future also for taking job.

Wow - it works, and it's easy!

WOW! Just WOW!

I've been trying to learn how to make good bread at home for a while, and have baked many loaves (about 3 5lb bags of flour worth), and have never been satisfied with the results, following directions and methods found elsewhere.

My very first attempt at Richard's methods has produced wonderful results! The dough is kneaded sufficiently in just a few minutes, has much better gluten development (without adding Vital Wheat Gluten), rises better... just better in every way than my previous attempts.

The included video is short, and I would say barely sufficient, but extremely helpful. No book can adequately describe the kneading method, and watching him do it on the video explains everything. I guess a picture is worth a thousand words after all.

If you want to make some good bread, get this book!

BEAUTIFUL FRESH BREADS

LOVE THIS BOOK: It's easy to weigh out the recipe, especially if you have a food scale. I use small paper bags for the flour as he uses.
I've had this book 3 weeks and already am the proud owner of 7 different flours in my arsenal. I'm amazed, how many , Different flours my local food store has. Today's bread has raisins,
Shallots, and hazelnuts. unusual and delicious at the same time. The book or the breads make great gift items.
Easy and concise instructions, and there's a video.

good book, DVD makes it much better

I have this book and "Crust" also by Bertinet and together they offer a somewhat unique, but effective, teaching method for making homemade breads. "Dough", the first book, is the one being reviewed but my comments also apply to "Crust" as the two books are essentially volume 1 & 2 of a bread making course.

Bertinet hails from Brittany and his northern French upbringing is evident throughout. He makes bread the way it's made in small French villages where the English influence predominates. The included short DVD's guide the reader through the basic mixing and kneading process that is somewhat different from the typical method employed in most bread books. Is it better? I don't think so, but it is another way of achieving the desired result and his demonstrations take place in a home (albeit, well equipped) kitchen rather than a commercial bakery or video production set so it's very reassuring to the novice.

The recipes themselves are good, but not great. And, like just about all bread making books they include a large percentage of breads that you probably won't ever make. I mean, let's face it, most home bakers want to make VERY GOOD baguettes/round loaves, a sourdough or two, good rye, some Italian loaves and a good pizza dough. Bertinet includes these along with numerous other breads and shapes, but then so does just about every other bread book out there. What makes these books valuable is the visual hands on experience one gets from the DVD's.

If you've never made bread (successfully) before these books would be a very good instructional tool and (with the included DVD's) worth the $50 they will run you. If you're a little more experienced I would HIGHLY recommend Maggie Glezer's "Artisan Baking". It's only available in paperback and there's no DVD's, but the content and photography is excellent. I would also recommend the chapter on bread in Julia Child's "The Way to Cook" as a excellent introduction to "french bread" making. It's also probably the best all around cook book you can buy.

This book breaks down Tort law tremendously. It was highly recommended by a second year law student and it totally helped when it came time for finals. It takes each section of the Prosser and Wade text and breaks it down into the most basic form. I'd recommend to all.

I am hooked on Emanuel Law Outlines and this book on Torts is no exception (I wish they would cost less). This soft covered text is over 500 pages and contains a capsule summary which gives you an overview of the sections which should be read first. Each chapter ends with a quiz (and answers and explanations). The book ends with Essay Exam Tips and Q's & A's. What can I say? I love these outlines!

Great study aid to use along with your class torts textbook. Emanuel boils down the law to the essentials and includes a summary outline in the beginning of the book for easy review and study. You get the law in a simple, concise way, saving you the trouble of trying to distill the law yourself from hundreds of convoluted, wordy opinions. Emanuel saved me from stressing out before midterms and gave me a reasonable grade.

Much More than a Horse Story

I'm not much of a horse story girl. Aside from some chapter books I read with my daughter when she was in 3rd grade about little girls with ponies, I haven't read a horse book since Black Beauty when I was in 3rd grade myself. Still, the cover of this book is alluring, and I'd heard a lot about it, so I gave it a shot. So glad I did. It is a great summer camp story. It's got all the things you would expect of an all girls' equestrian camp, snotty rich girls, that cool odd ball, and of course the new girl who is so darned curious. On top of all of that there is this mystery about a girl who went missing 5 years ago and is presumed dead, except Brynlei keeps seeing someone in the woods that looks like her. Is it really the girl? Is it a ghost? She is determined to find out. I was going to give this book 4 stars for just being a good, solid YA mystery, but then I got to the final 3rd of the book where the mystery finally unravels. From that point on the drama and tension had me on pins and needles to the very end. I wanted to know how it was all going to turn out and if everyone that I came to love so much in this book were going to be okay. So... 5 stars for hooking me in. A nice clean read, perfect for ages 12 and up. Highly recommend! And double recommend if you love horses.

A fun twist you will never see coming!

This book was a fun, easy read. Great for teens or adults. As a non-rider, I didn't understand a lot of the horse terminology that was heavily included throughout the book, but it was interesting and even a little educational. The ending well…. wow. Didn't see it coming and it kept twisting even after I thought I had it all figured out! I love a good mystery that I don't quickly guess the ending of. I will definitely recommend.

It’s even better when I learn something new or venture away from ...

When I pick up a book to read, I want to be engrossed in the story and carried away. I hope the storyline will take me someplace else, grab my attention, and keep it. It’s even better when I learn something new or venture away from my normal routine in reading. Trail of Secrets was all of this for me. I don’t usually read mysteries, but this book was very enjoyable and it took me to another place. I almost felt like I was at the riding camp and knew these characters. I found myself thinking about them during the days when I was not even reading the book! The author painted such a detailed picture of the characters’ personalities that you could really relate to the interactions between them. As others have mentioned, I knew nothing about riding and haven’t been around horses much…but I found the equestrian language and tactics intriguing. It was not over-emphasized, just introduced enough to seem very credible and add to the authenticity. It gave a glimpse into the sport/hobby of these girls and the knowledge they need to ride at that level. Anyways, the mystery aspect of the book was fun and a little wild – there are unexpected twists. This is a great novel for teens or adults, and a good book to use even to introduce a young adult to mystery. I recommend it and I would look forward to reading another novel by this author if a sequel follows! Really, four and a half stars.
