Best Southern African Bird Guide!

The Southern African Subregion may have the most field guides of any region, but the SASOL guide is undesputedly the best field guide to the region and probably the best bird book in Africa!
The book illustrates every single of the 900 species in full color. The plates are beautifully illustrated and the species are often shown in flight and females and juveniles are very often illustrated. The only very slight downside is that the plates are a little small, but there is a new, larger version that has been newly published in South Africa by Struik Publishers (Cape Town).
In South Africa's Birds & Birding magazine it was voted as the best field guide of the region by many ornithologists

The advertising campaigns launched by Kodak in the early years of snapshot photography stand at the center of a shift in American domestic life that goes deeper than technological innovations in cameras and film. Before the advent of Kodak advertising in 1888, writes Nancy Martha West, Americans were much more willing to allow sorrow into the space of the domestic photograph, as evidenced by the popularity of postmortem photography in the mid-nineteenth century. Through the taking of snapshots, Kodak taught Americans to see their experiences as objects of nostalgia, to arrange their lives in such a way that painful or unpleasant aspects were systematically erased.

West looks at a wide assortment of Kodak's most popular inventions and marketing strategies, including the "Kodak Girl," the momentous invention of the Brownie camera in 1900, the "Story Campaign" during World War I, and even the Vanity Kodak Ensemble, a camera introduced in 1926 that came fully equipped with lipstick.

At the beginning of its campaign, Kodak advertising primarily sold the fun of taking pictures. Ads from this period celebrate the sheer pleasure of snapshot photography--the delight of handling a diminutive camera, of not worrying about developing and printing, of capturing subjects in candid moments. But after 1900, a crucial shift began to take place in the company's marketing strategy. The preservation of domestic memories became Kodak's most important mission. With the introduction of the Brownie camera at the turn of the century, the importance of home began to replace leisure activity as the subject of ads, and at the end of World War I, Americans seemed desperately to need photographs to confirm familial unity.

By 1932, Kodak had become so intoxicated with the power of its own marketing that it came up with the most bizarre idea of all, the "Death Campaign." Initiated but never published, this campaign based on pictures of dead loved ones brought Kodak advertising full circle. Having launched one of the most successful campaigns in advertising history, the company did not seem to notice that selling a painful subject might be more difficult than selling momentary pleasure or nostalgia.

Enhanced with over 50 reproductions of the ads themselves, 16 of them in color, Kodak and the Lens of Nostalgia vividly illustrates the fundamental changes in American culture and the function of memory in the formative years of the twentieth century.

About the Author
UMAR QUADEER was raised in North Philadelphia, at a time were the city was the murder capital of the United States. At the age of 13 Umar moved to Sacramento California where he was introduced to Crips and Bloods. A year later he moved back to Philly with a gangster mentality. At 6 years old Umar learned how to walk and at the age of 9 his father taught him how to write. It was lyrics that he was taught to write, memorize and recite. At the age of 16 Umar was a powerful name in Philly performing on stage with the late notorious B.I.G., Mob Deep, and the Roots. Umar was surrounded by violence drugs and oppression so he fought back and became a victim of his environment. Umar spent ten years of his life in and out of prison. But in 2005 while doing time in the FEDS. He began writing stories from being bored in his cell every night. Umar was released from prison only to return 18 months later. Then and there he grew angry with his self and decided to build his craft of writing. He joined a novel writing class and earned a certificate and began to write book per month. He was determined to go home from jail and become successful with his writing career. Through the grace of god he was released in 2012 and self-published his first novel and scored a publishing deal with the Queen of Street literature Wahida Clark. Umar Quadeer writes from his experiences in the streets, real life events but changed to protect the innocence, creativity and passion which puts him in his own category of what he calls Real-Fiction.

Raw, Real and Riveting.

I have a penchant for anything gangster, so I was quite pleased with "Enemy Bloodline". It definitely does not disappoint. The story is fast paced, realistic, thrilling and sexy. There are lots of twists and turns that have you at the edge of your seat, in anticipation of what will happen next. Overall, I enjoyed "Enemy Bloodline", and hope there will be a sequel. I highly recommend it.

All I want to know is can I get a part 2? I'm not going to settle for this ending. This one really held me captive. I couldn't put it down. Spaz and his crew had to learn the hard way that the game has no loyalty. I knew Sticky was gonna be a problem and Slugger to. Grams gone handle the thing though. Please can I get a part 2!!!

This book offers an insightful translation and commentary, elucidating numerous cryptic Bible references. For example, it explains the powerful king-giants in Genesis as children of fallen angels. Please don't give these plagerists more money

Don't buy this book. The information that you are looking for here is available for free. Go to teradata.com/certification, check the objectives for the basics exam, then look up those same topics online. Go to info.teradata.com and read the online documentation. It is more detailed and thorough. Large portions of this book are copied directly from the online documentation, but edited in such a way that you aren't left with the information you need to pass the certification exam.
This book is ridiculously expensive for what it offers - a low quality and incomplete introduction to teradata that will not help you pass the exam, or help you use teradata. This volume is advertizing material for how great the teradata system is, not a guide on how to use it.

Teradata Basics study guide inadequate

This study guide is hopelessly inadequate for the preparation for the exam. The exam requires a level of detail that is not present in the study guide. The exam requires you to know delicate juxtapositions of facts, how Teradata elements interrelate in a matrix format, and very specific details about each element. The exam multiple choice questions present a set of answers that are often so similar to one another, that it is impossible to know if you are wrong or right. I studied for hours a day from the study guide for 2 weeks and still failed. I will need to supplement the study guide with Teradata manuals. The study guide does not give bullet points, and purposely does not present the information in the way in which you need to know it to pass. I am very disappointed that a study guide of this high price is so poorly put together that it does not prepare you. It is clearly done on purpose to make sure that this certification is very hard to obtain. They are dead right when they say in the preface of the book that studying it will not result in a pass.

Good guide..

Haven't taken the exam yet, taking it tomorrow. The last chapter is a bit of mess and refers to both the Unity Product suite and the old components now being replaced/called Unity or the Unified Architecture. Question 6 only has 1 answer, which is it? This chapter is confusing and leads me to believe I could be asked a question that references either Teradata Replication Services Or Unity Data Mover. I expected more given that this is a Teradata approved study guide. If I pass the exam tomorrow, I'll come back and up my review to 4 stars but right now I'm keeping it to 3.

I passed the exam and the study guide turned out to provide significant value so I increased it to 4 stars. As one other poster said, you definitely need practical experience along with the study guide to pass this exam. The exam is no push over.

About the Author

Helen M. Shields, M.D., FACP, AGAF, is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a gastroenterologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She received the Best Preclinical Instructor Award from the Harvard Medical School's 2004 and 2007 graduating classes and the Harvard Medical School Faculty Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 1999 and 2008.

Dr. Shields' Strongest Credentials

In my view, Dr. Helen Shields' strongest credentials for writing this book is that she has won more teaching awards than anyone on the entire Harvard Medical School faculty, I believe. Moreover, she has won THE prestigious faculty teaching award, that is, elected by the medical school faculty as an outstanding teacher on two occasions.

Even though I've been in academic medicine one way or the other; that is, as student or teacher for a total of no less than 56 years, I found this book delightfully informative and extremely useful.

The bibliography is well selected and quite comprehensive. The attention to detail and the specific valuable "cookbook" guidelines are inordinately useful. I took the book on vacation to look up a few specific items that I was curious about and I was attracted to other units of the book and before I realized it, I had read it in its entirety.

The practical advice, the thoughtful and often referenced recommendations and analyses are of tremendous value.

I believe it's valuable for students, as well as, young, middle, and senior people in the medical academic career track. It's also useful for anyone teaching in any medical setting.

I trust that others will gain as much from it as I have. I have purchased several copies to share with friends and colleagues involved with medical education.

One of the better med educ fac dev books I've purchased

I have read several medical teacher books either for my own development or in preparation for faculty development of colleagues. This book is a great balance of straight forward suggestions that can be readily applied (in classroom, rounds, morning report, conference presentation) and a succinct overview of the theory and research supporting various approaches (e.g., team based learning - how to do it and what kind of outcomes you can expect based on published studies).

While some sections or examples are more relevant to medical educators, I can see manual being very useful and acceptable to all health profession educators.

The chapters are quick reads so busy new faculty can get benefit in short time. And if they want more, the author often cites additional resources.

I have not reviewed books before but thought this one is worth others considering.
