Are you a savvy manager who wants to capitalize on the wave of change that is occurring with Web services, SOAs; and, more recently, cloud computing? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Douglas K. Barry, has done an outstanding job of writing a 2nd edition of a book that gives you the opportunity to consider some ideas and advice that just might make it easier for your organization to realize the potential benefits in Web services, SOAs, and cloud computing.

Author Barry, begins with a high-level story of how a person on a business trip interacts with a SOA based on Web services and cloud computing. In addition, the author provides a high-level explanation for the technology and standards used for the business trip. He then explains the Web services connections. The author then, weaves the concepts of service-oriented architecture into a discussion of cloud computing. Next, he introduces force field analysis and applies it to the adoption of Web services. In addition, the author applies force field analysis to service-oriented architectures. He continues by providing force field analysis for adopting two types pf cloud providers: software as a service and platform as a service. Then, the author deals with managing the human aspect of the change that occurs with the adoption of a service-oriented architecture with cloud computing. Next, he provides tips on how to make development easier. The author then introduces incremental SOA analysis that aims to help manage change by improving the project selection process in a way that also improves the chance of success for the selected project. In addition, he provides three basic experiments that use Web services and then uses the story about the business trip discussed earlier to address more advanced uses of Web services. The author continues by providing design concepts and considerations along with staffing and change issues to take into account when establishing a service-oriented architecture. Then, he discusses a way to evaluate external services and the systems and hardware that support these services. Solid, diverse, and wide ranging introduction to IT applications of the future

This is a well-written introduction to the technology behind cloud-based IT applications. It is definitely targeted at IT managers; it is not a detailed technical examination of how things are implemented. It does give extensive background and motivation for the evolution of application architecture, where things are going, and how to help your organization get there.

I particularly liked the material covering obstacles you are likely to encounter in your own organization and how to address them. This is perhaps the most unique and valuable part of the book. We all know about the existence of organizational "anti-bodies" that impede change. The book covers recognizing them, picking pilot projects to avoid them, and then moving the organization forward based on success.

There are lots of topics around the construction of SOA-based applications and the book touches on almost all of them. A few could have been covered in a bit more depth: it would have been interesting to hear more on legal issues, application reliability, and selection of vendors. Perhaps Mr. Barry will cover more of these in a next edition or another book!

Overall, this is an excellent book for getting started in cloud services and moving your organization toward a cloud-based future.

The art of communication is vitally important to most industries. In the technology and engineering fields effective and clear communication to the stakeholders of most large projects determines team successes or failures. Mr. Barry's ability to cross this communication chasm is unique and compelling. This book builds on his previous work, which I have part of my reference arsenal, if not for the technical explanation but the outstanding explanation of behaviors exhibited on teams within organizations. Excellent Work! I would recommend this book to any NON-IT manager interested in understanding the minds of their IT peers.

WHAT IS IS

This book was suggested byNatalie Goldberg for her upcoming class titled: "ROLLING WITH UNCERTAINTY: Koans and Writing." Steve Heine will also be instructing. I'm a tangential Zen novice. Natalie stated that writing practice is a back door to Zen. I am interesting in learning about other perceptions of reality.

I am unqualified to evaluate the accuracy of the research of Zen ancient texts that the book alludes to. The book is written in an academic style. This means there are lots of suppositions, cliches, and contradictions if one care looks for them, which I did (do).

While not the major intent of the book, there are similarities and contrasts with other world religions ingrained. These are not explicitly stated but are inescapable if one is aware of the larger topic This is to be expected; for after all Zen Buddism is a religion. Koans are part of the Zen holy text.

This book fits in a very small publishing niche whose audience is Zen seekers. It'll never make the New YorkTimes Best Sellers List. It's a good reference for Koans, if not the best there is. After all, Natalie recommended it!

About the Author
About the Author Alonda Williams is a Christian, wife, mother and education marketing executive. In her personal and work experiences, she has seen first-hand the damaging effects of poor self-esteem. Penny and the Magic Puffballs started as a bedtime story designed to help Alonda’s daughter feel comfortable with her natural puffy hair. Alonda used the story in the first book as a way to help her then young daughter learn to love her hair and to be comfortable in her skin. After seeing how the Penny stories helped her daughter, she wanted to share them with other little girls. While writing this book, Alonda was diagnosed with cancer. While going through treatment she met women and girls who not only had to deal with the illness but also had to cope with looking and feeling different. Through Roxie, Alonda wanted to celebrate the beauty of all women and girls regardless of outward appearances and encourage girls to love and support each other.

I bought "Penny and the Magic Puffballs" for my niece. She LOVED it!! I mean, she gave a thorough, unsolicited book review, complete with commentary on the illustrations! (Shout out to the AWESOME staff at Campus International! She applied book review skills in a real life situation.) She loved her first reading so much, I had to hear "part 1" of the book review when she called at 6:30am! After school, she came over to read it to me. We talked, laughed, and analyzed the lessons for Penny and other children..... Very well written!! I hope she reads many more in the series... (Chapter books with illustrations, too)...My niece has a twin brother... We need more books with girls and boys of color....It is so important to develop healthy self-images and love of self.... PLEASE & Thank u....

GIFT IDEAS: It's a great book to give to daycare providers and teachers for their classroom libraries or to Principals who may need it to help teach a common lesson in a loving way.... Buy the book....

This book is truly an inspiration for all little girls. It teaches them to love themselves and also to show love and kindness towards others.
I'm glad that the author decided to focus on the often complicated subject of bullying as it's definitely needed in this era of "mean kids".

I bought this, thinking It will have a message from Max Lucado. This is the John's gospel... with added titles and bold letters. I got 50 to give, for the same price you can get 50 new testaments.

This product doesn't have something wrong it's John's Gospel. But I think what they are selling is the Max Lucado name.
