This is a CRC book. What that means is that the paper quality is very low and the illustrations are worse than what you would find in a bad newspaper. The information is very dated. A real disappointment relative to book quality and usefulness.

Excellent Vendor

The price was great, I got the book on time and it was in perfect condition when it arrived. What more could you ask from a vendor? I saved 32% over the next highest vendor!! I was just pinching myself that I got such a great deal. I am developing a number of yogurt products for my employer so this was the perfect book. I even got an endorsement from someone I know in the Food Science Department at Cornell University that this is a good reference book for making yogurt. It is for the serious minded professionals who need to know about yogurt. It is technical but if you are serious about learning about yogurt this is the book for you. I would call it the Bible for yogurt making. If you can buy it from this vendor, you will be very happy you found that they had one available.

A Solid Industrial Gas Turbine Book

This is an excellent industrial gas turbine book. The content of the book is current and developed methodically, with the right amount of detail for a mechanical/electrical engineer or any practicing engineer dealing with industrial gas turbines. The subject is explained in a clear non-ambiguous language. One drawback is that it is rather expensive, hence I'm deducting one star for that.

Overall a solid book on the subject for a practicing engineer, or any engineer new to the field of gas turbines. Meherwan Boyce's book is very good too.

I. THE JEDI

Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace takes us back in time, to the very beginnings of the conflict depicted in the first three Star Wars films. In The Phantom Menace, the Jedi Knights have not yet withstood the attacks that would decimate their numbers. They are still a thriving and vital part of the galaxy.

Jedi History And Training

Founded as a philosophical study group, the ancient Jedi spent centuries contemplating the mysterious energy field called the Force. After mastering it, they chose to use their skills for good, helping those in need.

For 25,000 years, the Jedi Knights served as peacemakers for the Galactic Republic. Operating out of the Judicial Department under the office of the Chancellor, the Jedi became the guardians of freedom and justice. They battled interplanetary criminals and settled cosmic disputes, becoming legendary throughout the galaxy.

Utilizing the Force, Jedi Knights can perform incredible feats of strength and speed. A Jedi's keen mind can see far-off places, project illusions, move objects, and hypnotize opponents.

Jedi are usually identified within the first six months of birth. At this early age, the infants begin their Jedi training. Because older children experience fear and anger, the Jedi believe it is unwise to train them in the ways of the Force. To enter Jedi training, one must be approved by the Jedi Council.

The Jedi Council

High above the metropolis of Galactic City on Coruscant stands the colossal pyramid known as the Jedi Temple. All matters concerning Jedi are governed by the twelve members of the Jedi Council.

Except for the Jedi Knight Ki-Adi-Mundi, all members of the Council are Jedi Masters. Although Qui-Gon Jinn is a Jedi Master, he prefers active duty to a seat on the Council. To become a Jedi Master, a Jedi must have successfully trained a young apprentice, known as a Padawan. To maintain balance with the Force, the Council does not permit Jedi Masters to train more than one Padawan at a time.

Jedi Transport

Republic cruisers often serve as space transport for the Jedi. The Republic cruiser Radiant VII is an unarmed diplomatic vessel and is painted red to signal its diplomatic immunity. The planet Coruscant used the Radiant VII to send Jedi and ambassadors on many missions of peace throughout the galaxy. When the planet Naboo was blockaded by the Trade Federation, Supreme Chancellor Valorum dispatched the Radiant VII to the scene, hoping to avert a war....

Very informative ....

Though this is a book for young children, at the age of 30, I found, after seeing the movie, it helped me to understand the characters, planets, weaponry, and so much more. Do you know what determines the color of a light saber? Or how a Jedi is determined and at what age they start training? That and so many other answers are given in this book, it's packed full of great photo's and even gives a little lesson on the people who brought the film to being. Highly recommended!

Interesting Info, Cool Photos -- A Great Introduction

Just got this last night and think it's a good book. It's bound more like a magazine than a book. The first two pages are removeable "data cards" of Obi Wan, Queen Amidala, etc.
But inside, the scrapbook describes Jedi, Gungans, and everything else that's new in this movie. There are interesting tidbits about everything. The photos are colorful and quality, and the book's layout is jazzy and eye-catching.

I first read this about two weeks ago(well, it's not exactly the type you read cover to cover, you know) and I'm still looking over it. This is the type of book any Episode 1 freak (like me) would die for.This shows pretty much everything, from a 10-page overview of the Jedi (weapons, council, etc.), to the Creatures of the Core. It shows the inside of a lightsaber, and all you need to know about the beautiful queen Amidala (Natalie Portman's a goddess). If you're looking for a book about Episode 1 that you can look at for months, this is definitely the book for you.

Practical, Insightful, and Worth Each of the Six-Hundred Ninety Five Pennies that it Costs

I am not an advertising professional but in the profession of scientific research. Yet this book (which was written in the 1940s for advertising people) is just as relevant to my work as it is to anyone else who is a knowledge worker. This little book is one of the simplest summaries of commonsense---and articulating common sense is this book's greatest virtue. The book lays out a five step process for generating novel and not-so-novel ideas, articulating them, and giving them a life of their own. There are no examples, no case studies, just crisply articulated common-sense that you can put to immediate use. Everything that he says is stuff that you likely already know, so this is not one of those books that talks the lofty talk about "retraining your mind" and such obscure, undoable things. The idea in this book that most resonated with me was his comment that novel ideas are simply unusual connections among things that already exist and you might already know. The book takes about an hour to read from cover to cover (and I'm not even a fast reader).

Although Mr. Bernbach probably never intended this book for consumers like me in the scientific research profession, I'd bet my money that this little gem might be just as "duh" or "aha"-evoking to people in any other knowledge-intensive line of white-collar work. The only note of caution: This book was originally written in the 1940s and the gender bias ("the creative man," "he") is pervasive throughout its 48 pages.

If you are in a profession where your "wealth" is measured in intellectual output, this is some of the best seven dollars you can invest in your education. Highly recommended for anyone whose profession requires novelty, new ideas, and creativity. Buy---don't borrow--read, reread, and dog ear this little gem!

One of the few

I have a small collection of books that I consider "private stock". These are books that I never lend and I read over and over. This book is a private stock favorite. James Young has created one of the best books I have ever read on the process of creative thinking. The technique is simple and it works. I have applied this technique to a variety of situations when I needed "outside the box" solutions and it has never failed me. "A Technique for Producing Ideas" is an extraordinary book. It is a book that will make you wonder about the power of the mind and the nature of consciousness itself.

More, much more than a technique: A cohesive methodology

This booklet (28 pages) was originally published in 1940 and some new material was added twenty years later. The Foreword to the edition I have (published by Waking Lion Press in 2009) was provided by William Bernbach (1911-1982), one-time chairman and CEO of what was Doyle Dane Bernbach, then renowned for many of the greatest ads in the 20th century. The booklet's author, James Webb Young (1886-1973), added a "Prefatory Note" in 1960. His first publication, How To Become An Advertising Man (1963), focuses on core concepts that every ad practitioner and copywriter should know:

o Knowledge of Propositions
o Knowledge of Markets
o Knowledge of Messages
o Knowledge of Message Carriers
o Knowledge of Trade Channels
o Knowledge of How Advertising Works
o Knowledge of The Specific Situation

Today, these core concepts continue to provide the "basics" on which all effective marketing depends when attempting to create or increase demand for the given product and/or service and multi-media advertising is without doubt advertising's most powerful resource. However, for at least the past 75 years, everything begins with a compelling idea.

In A Technique for Producing Ideas, Webb offers what he characterizes as a "simple, five-step formula anyone can use to be more creative in business and in life! " Although the process itself is indeed simple, completing it to achieve the given results is a wholly different matter. Webb's focus is on the process by which to generate ideas. "They appear just as suddenly above the surface of the mind [like a lovely atoll above the surface of a deep blue sea]; and with that same air of magic and unaccountability. But the scientist knows that the South Sea atoll is the work of countless, unseen coral builders, working below the surface of the sea." Keep in mind that Webb developed or encountered this insight decades ago.

The details of the five-step "formula are best revealed in context, within the narrative. I will suggest now, however, that (a) this booklet is by no means relevant only to advertising or even to business in general, and (b) it can help almost anyone to develop more and better ideas when seeking a solution to a problem or an answer to a question. Because Webb thinks and writes so clearly, the booklet offers the additional benefit of helping its reader to reduce (if not eliminate) all the "clutter" in the mind that accumulates relentlessly over time.

Good Plot

I found this book very interesting as far as plot goes. The hero and heroine had met as teens. She was an inner city kid in an abusive home running drugs for the neighborhood drug lord. He was a trust fund kid trying to escape the controlling uncle who was administering his trust. She found him on the streets and took him in before he could fall prey to a life he knew nothing of. They became solid friends and when his fortunes changed and he was able to return to his life of privilege he took along going so far as to see that she had a college education. They then go through Frances becoming an author and a success in her own right and Allen becomes envious. To complicate matters the friendship has become a romance. Things get really complicated when Frances loses her memory after an automobile accident and still more complicated because she is also pregnant. She has to struggle to try to regain her memory,deal with a pregnancy and figure out her life with Allen. One very memorable and very interesting characters was an ex boyfriend who is having gender identity problems. He turns out to be a real friend who had her back through it all. She and Allen finally had their HEA.

Girl, You Are Quickly Becoming My Favorite!

I rated the characters as complex which is silly when you are talking about a short story like this, but girl, you quickly becoming my favorite! I LOVED this story - it was well written and engaging and it didn't require me to suspend my grammar Nazi tendencies...(you never do but, honey, some of your counterparts need to get a grip. Don't ask me to buy it if you can't even give it a simply read through to catch native language grammar and usage errors. UGH!)

But back to you...amnesia, really? But you know what? It worked. If you write it, I am reading it.

What a great book and so different. They were like night and day but Allen and Frances had each other's back. She protected him when he ran away from home. He took her off the streets. They were allies, then friends, then lovers. They knew the best and worst about each other because they grew up together. They've always had each other and that's the most enduring and selfless love of all. I loved this couple together. Great book Cher.

Feisty, sometimes brilliant first book about a journey across Siberia by bicycle. Jenkins, an editor for Backpacker and Summit, writes a leaping, impulsive prose that, for all its originality, should be whipped for its barbarisms: ``He lived with his faraway eyes crumpled in a stickwood wheelchair holding him and his medals very still in his backyard with his rosebushes growing tall as trees.'' In 1989, he tells us, he was invited to join three Americans (one a woman) and four Russians (two women) on ``the last great ride'' (Africa, South America, China, Europe, India, and Australia had already been done), 7,500 miles from Vladivostok to Leningrad--a journey to be filmed by Carl Jones, an American documentary filmmaker. Most of the team members were like Jenkins, born bikers obsessed with biking, often knocking off 90 miles a day through heavy weather. After the Americans met their Russian counterparts in Moscow, the team flew to Nekhoda, from where they would cross land twice the breadth of the US and go through seven time zones. At first the team was accompanied by a police car that tried to keep the Americans from observing the deprived lives of nearby Soviet citizens, but the bicyclists soon found themselves feted time and again by villagers following their progress on state-run TV. That Soviets live a hard life, with memories of Stalin hanging heavy, became clear to Jenkins; in fact, the Americans met Russians who had been jailed for five years for ``capitalism'' or for going into business on their own. Three of the fellow Russian bikers were not friendly and, tensions mounting, the team finally broke up on the last leg of its big ride. hard touring

Get past the stardust memories of his childhood, and the offputting ode to an adolescent girl's breeze-brushed nipples, and
"Off the Map" becomes the finest, most insightful tour report this side of Thomas Stevens' classic Around the World on a Bicycle. Jenkins' prose is overwrought at first, obscured by foilshiny darkglittering adjectives. He needs an adventure to wear him down enough to write past his brilliance into truth. He gets there.

A couple months ago, I read Ian "Sandy" Frazer's Travels in Siberia, a fine and lovely book. The telling difference is in the thousand-mile roadless tract between Kamchatka and Lake Baikal. It is made of mud, "balota." Frazier crosses it in a sealed train car, feeling slightly ill. Jenkins and his party ride their bikes through it. He meets people, he talks, he drinks, he rides like the wheel's own bastard child. You can guess whose journey is the more enthralling.

Mark Jenkins does more than ride through the muck, begging for milk. He passes through Siberian lives in the Soviet era like a bee through poisoned pollen, carrying with him the beauty and the rage, the cruelty and the generosity, the unbelievable filth and privation. He hears songs that sustain lives, and hums them back. He partakes and communes, and brings it home.

This is a moving and beautiful book. No one who cares about the depth of experience to be found on a bicycle should pass it by.

The tallish paperback is nice, by the way, and it's on Kindle, too. In either format, it's a good gift, when you've already given Fournel's Need for the Bike.

Fascinating Travel Literature

I truly enjoyed this book. When I'm not reading fiction I like to read travel books. Obviously the subject matter was fascinating (to me, anyway) - a road bike trip across Siberia - much of which was essentially roadless; but this one was unique in a couple of ways.

First of all it was an unusual shape - the book. Tall narrow pages. Different. But more importantly it was well edited. This book could have been seven hundred pages but it was joyfully succinct. The author didn't feel the need to tell us everything that happened along his four or five month bike ride across Siberia; instead he focuses on certain interesting aspects of the trip and skips the rest. He follows Elmore Leonard's advice: "Leave out the parts people skip."

But the best part was the unique writing style. The author sticks to standard narrative style for the most part, but switches, at times, to interior monologue and even stream of consciousness - but just enough to remain interesting.

A fascinating work of travel literature - highly recommended.

Very Entertaining; Epic with Commentary on the USSR in its twilight.

Ran across this book when I was looking to take a break from Sci-fi books. Since I am a bicycle commuter, I found the idea of bicycling across the largest country in the world very interesting. Many assumptions I had were shattered as I read this book about traversing the USSR in the late 1980's. This isn't a day by day account of the trip but rather more like a week by week account with some details on the daily struggles. Much of the book is devoted to the author's interactions with the local populace in rural russia. The reader comes away with a solid understanding of the county as well as the difficulties of traversing russia's land ocean.

Great book

I have been using Bagley's baits for many years. I saw Mr. Bagley on a fishing show when I was a kid, and I could see his lust for life. This book let's you inside of his life, from start to end. People like Jim Bagley don't come along too often, and his never say no attitude is very inspiring. I learned more about him and the other sides of his life. The author, Mrs. Vera Bagley, his loving wife, tells this story very well. I read this book from cover to cover, and couldn't put it down. If you're a fisherman, you have Mr. Bagley to thank for quite a few inventions and creations that are still used today. This is a great book that is inspirational for the outdoors person, or anyone who believes that you can attain your dreams if you believe in them and are willing to refuse to fail.

SAINT THOMAS bERRY

This book is a summary of the many books and thoughts which Thomas Berry has written and shared over so many years. He was so far ahead of his time and it has taken us so long to catch up with his thinking and wisdom. I was in the seminary in the 1950's-1960's. Would we have even been able to understand his thinking? I doubt it. Our own History of Philosophy course which touched on Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucionism, was almost put in the curriculum to bore us to death. So tragic that we did not have the great mind of Thomas Berry at that time. But then we would not have accepted him because the Catholic Way was the "only way" and we did not need to know anything else.

Thomas Berry is a true "ecological Saint". He needs to be read and reread and his work has to continue in all of us if there is to be any hope for this planet and for our world. Gently inspiring

I took this lovely book out of its package only a few minutes ago and first was intrigued by how the cover felt. It's soft. The photos inside are a muted palette of inspirational shots with closeups of stitches and weaves, light and shadow. Kantha and boro are discussed, along with contributions from various artists in the slow stitch field. I'm rushing to write this review because the book has made me (quietly) excited to explore my own handwork, but also because I have to go work at a quilt show today.

This is a pleasantly inspiring book, accessible but not academically in-depth--and that's not a complaint. I have many more academically directed books in my textile library so this is a refreshing book to have on hand. A nice primer for those who are exploring hand work as well as those who already enjoy it.

Excellent Book!

Lovely, wonder filled book. I am a long time reader of the blog this writer has maintained over a period of years. The blog was very good but this book is better than I could have hoped for. Claire has a unique way of touching the world through the art of stitch. Her words make us stop and think about our impact on the world and how we could make that better. The illustrations in this book are tactile and evocative - they make me want to put little stitches on every garment I own. The world needs more of Claire and her ideas and less of mass produced stuff. If you are trying to express yourself through stitch and dye then this book may inspire you to great things (possibly great small things). Hopefully this talented author will write more and leave a stitch trail for the rest of us to follow.

Beautiful images. Wonderful philosophical questions of production of "handmade" goods.

This is an art book discussing philosophy with a little 'how to' for dyeing with plants and over-dying commercial, recycled fabric, very old linen fabric, lace and thread, as well as new floss & threads in a very simple process. (Basically fill a canning jar with X and water, insert Y's plant's roots and leaves, then add small fabric, thread, floss, etc and set in sunny window with the top on for z's days or weeks.) Anyone who is very committed to acid-free, exacting, and archival processes may be disappointed.
However, this book is fantastic, gorgeous, and put together beautifully as almost all of Batsford's books. It has given me some starting places to think through several questions rolling around in my head about what has been pulling me away from the sewing machine and toward handwork in my art. It has great photos of current fiber installations, plus close ups of beautiful handwork with collaged pieces incorporating old textiles with new. What I found the most fascinating is all the different incredible textures one can make by repeating the same stitches in different densities over an area of layered, old soft fabrics that have been already sewn, used and loved-possibly for a few generations.
And that's just the first 1/2 of the book, as I've not finished yet. I can slam through bedtime kindle novels embarrassingly fast. But this book not only encourages slow thoughtful stitching, but of slow thoughtful reading and thinking as well. It would be a shame to skim the images and ooh and ahh and then relegate it to a bookcase somewhere. I've not had another hour since pulling the book out of the box to sit in a comfortable chair with good lighting and a cup of tea/coffee/wine and finish the book.
There is also some discussion about the new do it yourself and handmade sale website boom philosophies. It makes me wonder if we defeat the process by being caught producing 10 pieces of widgets as fast as possible to get out to 7 different customers ASAP. This is one of my favorite books bought in a while.
