Interesting look into the Roman world

I had to buy this book for my Roman Achievement class and I thoroughly enjoyed it- both the book AND the class! Much of what know of the lives of Romans was found by studying the many examples of how they wanted to be remembered- and that is primarily what this book offers. I like that it gives both English and Latin translations of tombstone inscriptions and that it is categorized by different social classes. This gave me a lot of insight into the differences between the lives of the aristocracy versus regular Roman families, slaves, freedman, or persons of the military. If you enjoy learning about the Roman era this book is a must have!

Great intro to Latin epigraphy

This book is good because it not only provides translations of a variety of interesting Latin inscriptions, it also teaches you a lot about the fascinating field of Latin epigraphy. It achieves this not merely by means of some nice introductory essays, but by printing, not simply a translation of each inscription, but also a relatively unedited Latin text followed by a more edited version of the Latin in which all the many abbreviations have been expanded into their full-word equivalents. This enables the reader to compare the translation with the text and learn those ubiquitous Latin abbreviations of which the Romans were so fond.

A great handbook for almost any management situation

This book is a great handbook for almost any management situation because it covers 19 critical management skills. In a very practical and easy to read style the authors walk you through a concept or process and you are shortly able to put it to work. The chapters with framework thinking are particularly important: managing conflict, stages of team development, and negotiating are good examples. It is a great handbook to refer to for various situations in business life.

Fabulous leadership book for all levels!

This book is pure genius. It is easy to read, easy to follow, and yet it contains critical elements that every leader and manager should know. I recommend it for newly commissioned officers in all branches of the military service.
This book is also an excellent ancillary or stand alone book for college level leadership courses. I read it cover to cover and just loved it. (I write leadership books. I wish I wrote this one.) I HIGHLY recommend The Competent Leader!

I read Stark & Flaherty's book, The Competent Leader, back in 1999 and am happy to say I enjoyed this new version even more than the last one. In this book, Stark and Flaherty succinctly identify changes in today's workforce, give specific suggestions on managerial strategies, remind us of the essential basics, and provide tools to keep us on track while navigating the dynamics of today's workforce. The tips for success at the end of each chapter provide an appreciated quick reference. The world of manging has changed greatly since 1999 and adapting our approach and application of managerial techniques is essential to achieve personal and professional success for ourselves, our teams and our companies. Flaherty and Stark have sparked a reboot of my managerial hard drive, clearing old perceptions and giving me the energy to implement new strategies to succeed as a Leader in 2011. Writing has been a way to express whenever he felt a desire to share his thoughts. He took to writing for the immense pleasure associated with it. He has been captivated by the Indian mythology and the world civilizations since childhood. A mechanical engineering graduate, he could never ignore the logic behind the ancient scriptures. He also finds the array of human emotions and the different shades attached to each of those feelings very fascinating. When he decided about penning down his first novel, it was quite natural that he chose a story which saw the confluence of a thriller unraveling secrets of mythology and a touching love story.

he quest and the suspense kept me hooked

Incognito is a story of love, desperation, and shattered hopes. The characters have been given thorough thought and their interactions are very engaging. I love the way elements of science, mythology, divine intervention are introduced in the story with an excellent balance. Punya Saran's character is very much like someone you know. The quest and the suspense kept me hooked to the book till the very end.

I would have loved even more if the author had included more on Drishti, but that did not come in the way of enjoying this story!

Without revealing the plot too much, Incognito is a fresh story in which the author has been able to create a new quest that a reader can't wait to get till the end.

A must read for someone who wants to aspire something great in public service

Republican on the throne is a good book which I found very engaging through out most of my reading. For young Ethiopians who aspire to know how a turn of event led to the revolution and then to our current plight should read this book and learn a great deal. Even though I am a big fan of Emperor Haile Selassie the author tries to point out where it goes wrong under the Emperor final years in power. As a cabinet member under the Emperor and then the early days of the military junta the author takes us where no one took us before the inside dealings under the military junta where millions were killed after they took power from the Emperor. It is sad to count out how many educated and people who were wiling to work for their country were perished under the evil leadership of Col. Mengistu Haile Mariam who still enjoys a safe harbor in Zimbabwe thanks to Mugabe.

The Author personal accounts in the three regime he experienced in Ethiopia has in the past half a century also shows how the country goes from an OK state to a one disastrous one. He also faced a false charge with the current government and thrown to a jail. For such distinguished person not only from locally but at international arena to be thrown in jail under false pretense shows how people in the government exploit the rule of law for personal reason says a lot about them and the political system the country face currently. It is sad after 37 years of highly anticipated revolution the country is still going backward and the young still try to advocate for a democracy with unworkable multi party system because it has no genuine honest basis.

I would like to thank the author for working on this memoir. He is not only show us things from different angel he also shed a light to many dark things we only know in not clear terms.
