About the Author
Jim Payne is a drummer, author and producer with an extensive resumé in all three areas. As a drummer he has played with Maceo Parker, The J.B. Horns, The Blues Magoos, Dave Liebman, The Radio City Orchestra, Mike Brecker, Slickaphonics and his own band, New York Funk. He studied drums with Sonny Igoe, Henry Adler, Jim Strassburg, Philly Joe Jones and Bernard Purdie. He has a BA from Yale University, an MBA from Columbia University and has attended The Manhattan School of Music. He has taught drums for many years, authored Give The Drummers Some!, Funk Drumming and The Complete Book of Funk Drumming and produced the video How To Play Drums From Day One . He has also written articles for Downbeat and Modern Drummer Magazine and produced records for Medeski, Martin and Wood, The J.B. Horns, Fred Wesley, Mike Clark and Paul Jackson and, his own band, Jim Payne s New York Funk.

great funk beat book

if your a casual novice drummer like myself and want to learn how to play funk, r&b and swing beats to add to your repertoire this is a great book to pick up. i took it in to a drum lesson with a teacher whose been playing for 40 years and he was so impressed we spent the entire time just practicing beats from this book. If you ever wanted to learn how to drum to James Brown or tower of power, this book is even more for you! it comes with a CD, too.

learn the original basslines to these beats,or just loop 'm and jam along.
there's no bassbook with that many great funklines.this also helps if you're lucky & meet a drummer that knows 'm all!

Not only is this a wonderful tribute to Clyde Stubblefield, Jabo Starks, and all the other greasers who forever raised the stink bar for soulful drumming, but it's a terrific legacy for Jim Payne. Nobody who aspires to displacing a backbeat should be without it. Thanks Mr. Payne.
